Reactive alumina powder enhances the density, strength, and thermal resistance of high-performance refractories and advanced ceramics. Reactive alumina powder is a fully calcined, sub-micron alpha alumina engineered for high-density refractory castables and technical ceramics. Characterized by small primary crystal sizes and broad particle packing capabilities, it acts as a reactive matrix binder. It fills micro-voids between larger aggregate particles, enabling dense packing and uniform microstructure development during heat treatment.


Chemical purity and particle size distribution determine the powder's performance. For example, HUAO HA-500 features a low alkali content (Na₂O ≤ 0.10%, typical 0.08%) and controlled iron impurity (Fe₂O₃ ≤ 0.03%), preventing premature fluxing. With a median particle size (D50) of 0.5 μm and a specific surface area (BET) of 7.5 m²/g, it provides high reactivity while maintaining good flowability in low-cement castables.


Using sub-micron reactive alumina reduces the water requirement needed for refractory mixing. Lower water consumption directly minimizes porosity, increasing hot modulus of rupture and slag corrosion resistance in steelmaking, cement kilns, and glass furnaces. Selecting the correct particle distribution ensures optimal rheology during placement and maximum thermal stability during service.
